and this little piggy...

More speedy suppers.

One
Roast pork belly with rice and veggies, hot. I ate all the crackling in one go, standing in the kitchen, gnawing on the non-crispy stub until my teeth begged for mercy.

As I tidied & washed up I took out an oven dish and put the rest of a the leftover rice as a bed, with slices of cold pork on top.  Foil over, in the fridge.

Two
Day two, home late, I put the oven on to 200 degrees and bunged in the porky-rice dish, still foil covered. I wandered back after 25 mins or so and cooked some frozen peas to throw over.  The pork had softened up and its fat lubricated the rice.  Gorge-pants.

Three
The last 4 or 5 slices of cold pork went into the oven for 25 mins, on high.  As before, it released its tasty fat and also crisped up the edges.  I cooked noodles (you need more than one sheet, one is never quite enough) with chunky-sliced leeks; drained them, then tipped the noodles & leek into the hot pork dish. A modest glug of toasted sesame oil and a less modest slick of soy sauce perfected it all.  A quick stir then down the hatch.

Disclaimer: if you have a hot lime pickle problem, you will already know that this condiment goes well with all these dishes.  Because lime pickle goes with almost anything if you have a pash on it.

Taro times

Taro Brewer Street surpassed itself again.
The soya broth in the gent's spicy ramen was light and almost meaty tasting. In the good way, of course.

My tempura udon had two generous prawns and great broth. When I first encountered this in Japan I speed-scoffed the crispy tempura, having a horror of the batter getting soggy. But I soon learned to relax and enjoy the dish as it should be eaten. I even adopted the noodle-slurp!

The pork ramen I had in Taro last time was quite possibly the best ramen I have tasted since visiting Japan.  Happily the gent has quite the obsession with miso soup at the weekend: long may it continue!

Skuzz

I had such a rubbish food day this morning that I spent the afternoon making up for it.

The milk was sour at breakfast time, so I decided on peanut butter on rice cakes. But I had eaten all the rice cakes. So I had some trusty ryvita with marmite which, after a bite, I surmised were quite nasty tasting and maybe a bit mouldy, so I ditched that too. I ended up with my head in a tub of cold roast chicken, like your favourite drooling mutt.

At cake time I was pleased with the birthday bakery I had done: one damp lemon and almond cake and one lemon drizzle cake. The latter wasn't as light as I hoped and the top could have been more tart... but it seemed to go down well with everyone. And after yoga I gave in to temptation and strolled the two minutes down the road to my local 'Miso'. Empty as my tum, except for a few couples, I had instant service. Whilst waiting for my food, I sat at the counter swinging my legs and reading the menu. It occured to me just how great it was to live so close to so much different food. I must have finally eaten enough Indian to warrant a break and then had to decide between Thai, mixed-Asian, fish and chips, chinese, non-vegetarian Indian, African (I think), Italian...

Back at home, slimy noodles and vegetables - with free prawn crackers - were the perfect choice. Noice.
